Some of you might have seen this already, but I hadn't. I thought it was interesting enough to post. I see it discussed elsewhere as some Soviet soldiers playing a prank - but it looks like a sort of low-tech experiment to launch a pig, recover it - and see if it survived.
Amazingly, despite the massive acceleration - it appears to have survived.
Of course, a bottle of wine before hand might have helped it calm it's piggy-nerves.
If anyone knows the story behind these photos, I'd be very interested in hearing about it.
Ding - Ding - Ding! We've got an answer! Courtesy of Megan Case in St. Petersburg:
It's from Perviye Na Lunye (First on the Moon) -- the best mockumentary ever!! I wrote about it in my blog awhile back. It's the (untrue, of course) story of the USSR's mission to the moon in the 1930's.You can read more about this mock-umentary at EuropeanFilms.net. I am looking around, didn't find it on Amazon or some other places, but there are copies for sale on Ebay.
Don't know if and when it will be available in the west, but Kostia and I saw it in the theater and bought the DVD (a licensed copy even!) as soon as it came out.
